Lore & Background
Its stated goal is world peace through the power of the nine Tailed Beasts, and it recruited rogue ninja such as Deidara, Sasori and Hidan to collect them. The real plan was Obito's: feed the Tailed Beasts to the Gedo Statue, turn it back into the Ten-Tails with himself as its host, and cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi from the moon. Apart from Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki's attempt to capture Kurama, the group stays in the background in Part I; in Part II it captures Gaara, extracts Shukaku, and goes after the remaining Tailed Beasts. After Nagato's death, Konan leaves the Akatsuki and pledges loyalty to Naruto.
Reader's Guide
Kishimoto called the Akatsuki's members antiheroes, since he wanted to give their backgrounds as much depth as those of the protagonists. In the Boruto era, Shin Uchiha plans to revive the Akatsuki using Sasuke's Sharingan.
