Background
The episode is told as a flashback: Ruthie, Princess Carolyn's great-great-great-granddaughter, narrates a particularly bad day in Carolyn's life for a school project. During that day Carolyn learns she has miscarried, fires her assistant Judah for turning down a lucrative project without telling her, and breaks up with her boyfriend Ralph. In the end Ruthie is revealed to be a fantasy Princess Carolyn uses to cope with her troubles; she later gives the name Ruthie to the baby porcupine she adopts. The episode was nominated for the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Animation, losing to "Time's Arrow"; Vulture gave it five stars out of five, The A.V. Club an A, and The Atlantic called it and "Time's Arrow" the season's two best episodes.
