Julio Olarticoechea
Argentine World Cup winner and defender for multiple clubs.
Julio Jorge Olarticoechea, born on 18 October 1958, is a former Argentine defender. He played for Argentina in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, winning the tournament in 1986. During that World Cup in Mexico, he shared a room with Diego Maradona.
His club career included stints with Argentinos Juniors, Deportivo Mandiyú, River Plate, Boca Juniors, and Racing Club in Argentina, as well as FC Nantes in France. He later managed Talleres de Remedios de Escalada.
Olarticoechea won the Argentine Primera División with River Plate in 1981 and the Supercopa Sudamericana with Racing in 1988, also finishing as runner-up in the 1989 Recopa Sudamericana. Internationally, he was a World Cup winner in 1986 and runner-up in 1990. His hometown of Saladillo, Buenos Aires, erected a roadside monument in his honor.
