José Sanfilippo

José Francisco “El Nene” Sanfilippo (4 May 1935 – 4 June 2026) was an Argentine striker who played for San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors, and Banfield in Argentina, Nacional in Uruguay, and Bangu and SC Bahia in Brazil.

Born in Buenos Aires on 4 May 1935, Sanfilippo netted his first league goal for San Lorenzo on 21 November 1953 against Banfield. He went on to score 192 league goals for the club through 1962. He moved to Boca Juniors in 1963, but was let go in 1964 after a disciplinary issue during a match against his former team, San Lorenzo. Later in 1964, after the first round of the Copa Libertadores, he joined Uruguayan side Nacional. He scored against Colo Colo in his only Copa match for the club, then suffered an injury in a friendly. As of 2026, he ranked ninth among all-time top scorers in Argentine football.

Internationally, Sanfilippo represented Argentina at the 1958 and 1962 FIFA World Cups.

Sanfilippo died on 4 June 2026 at age 91.

His honors include the Argentine Primera División title with San Lorenzo in 1959, 1972 Metropolitano, and 1972 Nacional; a Copa Libertadores runner-up finish with Boca Juniors in 1963; the Torneo Cuadrangular with Nacional in 1964; the Campeonato Baiano with Bahia in 1970 and 1971; and with Argentina, the Pan American Games in 1955 and the Copa América in 1957. Individually, he was the Argentine Primera División top scorer in 1958 (28 goals), 1959 (31), 1960 (34), and 1961 (26), the Copa América top scorer in 1959, and the Copa Libertadores top scorer in 1963 (7 goals).
