Positive Parenting

Bluey's picture of supportive, hands-on parents.

The show focuses on the family's imaginative play together, often involving their neighbours.[1] The Heeler family's supportive dynamic, seen in the interactions among Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli, is a key element of the show.[2]

Making and release

Joe Brumm is the show's creator, who conceived the idea while working on Charlie and Lola.[3] Brumm's experience raising two daughters inspired the series.[4] The Walt Disney Company acquired the international broadcasting rights in 2019, and the series premiered on Disney Junior in the United States on 9 September 2019.[5] Joe Brumm's goal was to show how valuable imaginative play is for children, and he chose a cattle dog for the main character to ensure the series had an Australian identity.[4]

Ludo Studio was contacted by Brumm to help develop the series; the pilot was then presented by Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson at industry events like MIPCOM.[6] A five-minute animated sample was created by the studio and shown at the 2016 Asian Animation Summit, where it caught the attention of executives from the ABC and BBC.[7] An order for 52 seven-minute episodes was placed by the two networks, with the BBC providing 30 percent of the financial backing.[7]

What the cited sources add

Brumm's older sibling Adam became an archaeologist, which became Bandit's occupation in the show.[8] The original Bluey in Brumm's life was a blue heeler that did not get along with the family's dalmatian, Chloe.[8] Brumm decided the show would not focus on reading and numbers, but rather on four- to six-year-olds' social development.[8] Brumm's writing method can start with him jotting down observations from his own family's life, like the games his kids play.[8]

The show's producers have turned down requests to change the Australian accents for international broadcasts.[9]
