Lore & Background
The encounter was initially one of reverence rather than violence. Tyrell greets Batty as his "prodigal son" and tells him his life cannot be extended, but that he should revel in the life he has, having done and seen things others could only dream of. However, when Batty's plea for extended longevity was met with a cold refusal stating that such an extension was biologically impossible, the dynamic shifted instantly. The realization that his creator could offer no salvation turned Batty's desperation into lethal resolve.
Reader's Guide
The sequence begins when Roy Batty uses J.F. Sebastian, who is playing correspondence chess with Tyrell, to get into Tyrell's penthouse. A tense dialogue unfolds as Batty pleads for an extension to his four-year lifespan. Tyrell answers that it cannot be done, because of the instabilities of replicant genetics, and praises what Roy has achieved in his short life. Realizing there is no mercy or miracle to be found, Batty's demeanor shifts instantly from supplicant to executioner. He kisses Tyrell, then kills him by crushing his eyes and skull. Sebastian tries to flee and is later reported dead; Roy returns to Sebastian's apartment, where Deckard has just killed Pris.
