The film was the first Marvel Studios production to feature a primarily African-American cast.[1] Ryan Coogler directed the film, which he called his "most personal movie to date."[2] Chadwick Boseman was cast as the Black Panther character in October 2014, and according to a Deadline Hollywood report, he signed a five-film deal with Marvel.[3]
Key facts and history
Wesley Snipes announced his intention to make a Black Panther film in June 1992, hoping to highlight Africa's majesty and counter negative stereotypes.[4] The film's Wakandan language was based on the Xhosa language, taught to Boseman by John Kani.[5] Coogler's vision for Wakanda was inspired by the southern African country Lesotho.[6] In January 1994, Wesley Snipes began discussions with Columbia Pictures about portraying Black Panther, and by March of that year, Stan Lee, who co-created the character, had become involved with the project.[4]
Boseman did not go through an audition process for the role; instead, he talked with Marvel about his creative vision for the part and was paid $2 million for the film.[7] Principal photography started on or before January 21, 2017, in Atlanta, using the code name Motherland for the production.[8]
