Key facts and history

Coogler wanted original songs from Lamar for the film, and after Lamar finished his album Damn, Coogler showed him footage from the movie.[4] Lamar and producer Sounwave were drawn in by the film's opening scene and decided to create a full album rather than just a few songs.[4] Coogler's thoughts on the album were inspired by 1990s film tie-ins where artists made music inspired by film themes.[2] Work began while Lamar was on The Damn Tour in August 2017, with around 80 percent of the album completed by the tour's end.[5][6]

The album's artwork was created by Nikolas A. Draper-Ivey, who was approached by Interscope Records.[7] According to Sounwave, the album differed from his and Lamar's typical output because they adhered to the narrative of the film instead of inventing their own.[5]

What the cited sources add

A Pitchfork article notes that Black Panther is the largest Hollywood production with a majority black cast.[8] The same article states that music is a crucial element of Wakanda world-building because it remains a primary outlet for storytelling across Africa.[8] A FACT magazine interview reports that Coogler described the film as an "exploration of what it means to be African."[9] That interview also states that Lamar appears on and co-wrote all 14 tracks of the album.[9]

A piece from Film Music Reporter indicates that the score album became available for digital download on February 16, 2018.[10]
