Key facts and history
Göransson went to Mexico City to research and recreate Mayan music, which he felt was forcibly erased from history.[3][4] He worked with musical archaeologists and found instruments from graves, including flutes with multiple components.[4] Ancient instruments used included seashells, turtle shells, clay flutes, and shakers.[4][5] Namor's theme was played on a seashell, an instrument Göransson described as difficult to play with limited range.[4][5]
In September 2021, Göransson confirmed he would be involved with the film.[1] The narrative largely unfolds within the underwater realm of Talokan, drawing from Mesoamerican, Wakandan, and Nigerian cultural influences.[3][4] The musical motif for T'Challa was modified and incorporated into the score.[3][6] For the original songs, Göransson worked alongside rappers, singers, indigenous musicians, and indigenous singers.[3][5]
What the cited sources add
A clay flute called a "death whistle" produced an abrasive sound representing Namor's action or strength.[4][5] Göransson described the process of blending score and songs as seamless, using elements from the score in the songs and vice versa.[5] To achieve the precise melody he envisioned for Namor's theme, Göransson explained that the seashell sound was created by merging two different seashells.[5]
