Concept and creation
Noelle Silva was not originally intended by her creator to develop as quickly as she did, but she began growing alongside Asta before he even noticed. Her story was planned around overcoming her inferiority complex and awakening her royal potential through their battles. Her design draws from "The Ugly Duckling," with white feather-frilled clothing, wing-like ornaments in her Valkyrie Armor, and feathers in manga artwork, reflecting her past of being mocked.
Appearances
Noelle was born to the House of Silva, one of the Clover Kingdom's three royal families. Her siblings mocked and bullied her for causing their mother Acier's death due to her childbirth and for her inability to control her magic. Yami Sukehiro's kindness led her to join the Black Bulls after her family's squad rejected her. Despite initial reluctance due to pride, she stayed after the squad accepted her poor magic control.
During a mission to Saussy, a young girl's pleas gave her courage to stay and use her magic to form a barrier against Heath Grice's attack. She developed romantic feelings for Asta but was reluctant to express them. At the Underwater Temple, encouragement from the Black Bulls helped her learn a spell to transport the squad underwater. Kahono revealed that Noelle had been unconsciously holding herself back out of fear of hurting others.
She used her magic offensively for the first time against Vetto when he threatened her friends, though he regenerated using Forbidden Magic. In the Forest of Witches, Asta's trust gave her confidence to defeat the Third Eye member Fana.
Reception
Noelle ranked high in yearly Japanese Black Clover popularity polls, placing ninth in the second poll with 709 votes, fifth in the fourth poll with 1,337 votes, and first in the fifth poll with 80,150 votes. Daniel Dockery of Crunchyroll praised her character arc for learning to love and accept others despite social standings, freeing herself from discriminatory thinking, and developing confidence and magic. Marion De Leon of Toonami Faithful noted that her moments of weakness highlight her strengths, transforming reluctance to hurt into a desire to protect.
Rachel Trujillo of Anime News Network highlighted her mentorship with Mereoleona. Ivy Rose from Anime Feminist praised their relationship for portraying them as fully articulated people rather than stereotypes. Shawn Hacaga of The Fandom Post called her growth rewarding, noting her perseverance through terrible experiences. LaNeysha Campbell observed that she gained confidence through the Black Bulls' positive influence.
Krishna Mayuri of Otakukart was impressed by her second fight against Vanica, saying Tabata gives characters a human touch, with Noelle ready to kill Vanica and fans loving this.
