Three Michelin-starred chefs mentor students in a cooking competition.
The Chef's Protege was a BBC Two cooking competition that aired in 2012 and was not renewed after its first series. The show followed three Michelin-starred chefs as they returned to their old catering colleges to find and train a protégé. Each chef began with a group of seven student candidates, eliminating them one by one until only one protégé remained. The series ended with a final cook-off where the three chosen protégés were judged by their mentors’ own former teachers, who assessed both technical skill and how well each protégé embodied their mentor’s cooking style and philosophy.
The three chef-mentors were Tom Kitchin, head chef of the one-Michelin-starred The Kitchin, who had been mentored by Pierre Koffman at La Tante Claire; Theo Randall, head chef of Theo Randall at the InterContinental and former holder of a Michelin star at The River Café, where he was mentored by Ruth Rogers and the late Rose Gray; and Michel Roux, Jr., head chef of the two-Michelin-starred Le Gavroche, who was mentored by his father Albert Roux at the same restaurant.
The colleges involved were Perth College (where Kitchin studied), Brooklands College (where Randall studied), and University College Birmingham (which, though not attended by Roux, has strong ties to the Roux family).
The series comprised twenty episodes broadcast on consecutive weekday evenings over four weeks. The first three weeks each focused on one chef reducing their seven candidates to two semi-finalists—Kitchin in week one, Randall in week two, and Roux in week three. The final week saw the semi-finalists compete for the role of protégé over the first three nights, in the same order. The penultimate night had each protégé cook a three-course menu for their mentor, who selected two dishes to improve before the final night, where the chefs’ own mentors judged them.
The winner was Jamie MacKinnon, Tom Kitchin’s protégé, while the protégés of Theo Randall and Michel Roux, Jr. were runners-up. No official scoring system was documented for the final judging.
