Did You Know?

Project Reality: BF2

Project Reality: BF2 includes five game modes. Advance and Secure requires capturing control points in a set order, with both teams attacking and defending; some maps assign one team to attack and the other to defend. Insurgency simulates asymmetrical warfare, where a conventional force searches for hidden weapon caches while insurgents defend them. Vehicle Warfare emphasizes heavy vehicles and restricts players to crewman or pilot roles, with gameplay otherwise identical to Advance and Secure.

Command and Control removes control points, focusing on player-built fortifications and a single Forward Operating Base (FOB) that each team must defend while seeking the enemy's FOB. A co-op mode allows human players to play with or against computer-controlled bots, and can serve as a single-player experience. Additional supplies enable fixed defenses such as machine guns, barbed wire, and foxholes.

Project Reality: ARMA 2

Project Reality: ARMA 2 is a standalone modification requiring both Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead. It is self-contained and does not rely on external add-ons, offering a single installation package. Version 0.1 BETA was released on September 2, followed by version 0.15 beta on March 16, 2012. Version 0.16, released on March 1, 2013, added two new terrains. Development for the Arma 2 mod ceased with that release, as efforts moved to Arma 3.

Successors

In early 2009, a standalone successor called Project Reality 2 was announced as in pre-production, and a license for the C4 Engine was purchased in 2010. A posting on the Crytek developers community claimed the game would use CryEngine 3, but Project Reality staff dismissed this as rumor. Later announcements confirmed that Project Reality 2 would use CryEngine 3, as the C4 Engine was considered unsatisfactory by many developers. No release date was set, and after 2014 no further word came from the team; one main developer stated production had stopped. On October 10, 2014, a team of current and former Project Reality: BF2 developers announced a new commercial game called Squad, built on Unreal Engine 5. Squad was funded via a Kickstarter campaign, entered Steam Early Access in December 2015, and officially released on September 23, 2020.
