David Alejandro Cubillán León, born July 27, 1987, is a Venezuelan professional basketball player currently suiting up for Trotamundos de Carabobo in the Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto. He played his college ball at Marquette, where he served as the first man off the bench behind starting point guard Dominic James. Cubillán has been a key figure for Venezuela’s senior national team, earning gold at the 2014 South American Championship, the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, and the 2016 South American Championship, plus a silver at the 2012 South American Championship. He also represented his country at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Background
Cubillán’s college career at Marquette saw him as the primary backup to Dominic James. As a freshman on March 3, 2007, he poured in a career-high 20 points to help the Golden Eagles beat Pittsburgh 75–71. His quickness and three-point shooting became his trademarks. After college, he signed with Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli Premier League in July 2013, but was released that same season.
He then moved to Maccabi Ashdod, and finished the 2013–14 campaign with his third team of the year, Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuela, where he is regarded as one of the league’s best point guards. In August 2017, Cubillán announced he would play in Brazil for Flamengo.
He later returned to Trotamundos. On the international stage, he helped Venezuela win gold at the 2014 South American Championship, the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, and the 2016 South American Championship, and took silver at the 2012 South American Championship. He also played at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
