Damiris Dantas do Amaral is a Brazilian basketball player who competed for her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She was named Most Valuable Player at the Under-19 World Championship in 2011 and won a bronze medal at that tournament. Dantas also helped the senior national team win the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for Women.
WNBA
Damiris Dantas entered the WNBA when the Minnesota Lynx picked her 12th overall in the first round of the 2012 draft. The plan was for her to join the league after the 2012 Olympics, and she officially signed with the Lynx on April 2, 2014. She made her debut on May 16, 2014, pulling down 12 rebounds in a win over Washington, and became just the second rookie ever to notch at least 10 boards and 5 assists in a debut. With Rebekkah Brunson out due to tendinitis, Dantas stepped into the starting lineup and soon led all WNBA rookies in rebounding.
On August 9, 2015, she put up 18 points. A three-team trade on July 27, 2015 sent her to the Atlanta Dream. She was suspended for the 2016 season after skipping training camp to train with Brazil’s national team for the Rio Olympics; Atlanta kept her rights and expected her back in 2017. On February 8, 2019, Dantas returned to the Lynx as a free agent.
A calf injury cost her some games that year, but she started all 26 she played, posting career highs in minutes, points, and assists per game. She sharpened her outside shooting to create space for Sylvia Fowles inside. In the 2020 WNBA Bubble, she hit 44.3% of her threes on over four attempts per game, averaging 12.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. That September, she signed a multi-year extension with the Lynx.
