Biff Steals Sports Almanac

One stolen book turns a bully into the king of a dark, twisted future.

The theft of the Sports Almanac by Biff Tannen represents the most significant divergence in the Back to the Future timeline, transforming a humble high school bully into an alternate-reality dictator. This pivotal event occurs when the elderly Biff discovers a time-traveling DeLorean and intercepts his younger self, handing over a guidebook containing fifty years of sports scores. This single act of temporal interference creates a dystopian alternate 1985 in which Biff Tannen is one of the country's wealthiest and most corrupt men.

Lore & Background

By handing the book to his younger self, Old Biff ensures that his past self can place bets on every major sporting event for decades. With this wealth Biff turns Courthouse Square into a casino and takes over Hill Valley. In the resulting timeline George McFly was secretly killed by Biff in 1973, Lorraine has been forced to marry him, and Marty has been sent to boarding school in Switzerland.

Reader's Guide

The dominoes fell in 2015 when the elderly Biff overheard Doc warning Marty about the sports almanac and retrieved it after it was discarded. While Marty and Doc were at the 2015 McFly home, he stole the DeLorean time machine. He travelled to November 12, 1955, and found his younger self just before the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. Old Biff handed over the almanac and then returned the time machine to 2015.

In the altered 1985, George McFly was dead, Lorraine had been forced to marry Biff, and Marty had been sent to boarding school in Switzerland. When Marty and Doc returned from 2015 to this altered 1985, Doc deduced that old Biff had taken the time machine to give his younger self the almanac. Back in 1955, Marty secretly followed young Biff and watched him receive the almanac from his 2015 self, then chased Biff's car on a hoverboard and got the book back. Marty burned the almanac, nullifying the changes it had caused to the timeline.
