Lego Marvel's Avengers

A Lego game adapting the first two Avengers films.

Lego Marvel's Avengers

Lego Marvel's Avengers is a 2016 action-adventure game from Traveller's Tales and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, released on Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. A spin-off of *Lego Marvel Super Heroes* and the second game in the Lego Marvel series, it draws from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, mainly following the plots of *The Avengers* and *Avengers: Age of Ultron*, with single levels based on *Captain America: The First Avenger*, *Iron Man 3*, *Thor: The Dark World*, and *Captain America: The Winter Soldier*.

The game includes characters from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and comic books, such as Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Thor, Ultron, Loki, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Vision, and War Machine, alongside lesser-known figures like Devil Dinosaur and Fin Fang Foom. Over two hundred playable characters are featured, with most returning from the previous game except Fantastic Four and X-Men characters. Comic book characters not yet in films at release—Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel—are also included. Director Arthur Parsons described it as a celebration of everything Avengers: comics, movies, and cartoons.

Gameplay follows the Lego franchise formula, focusing on puzzle-solving and action. Players solve puzzles across environments to progress. New York City serves as the main open-world hub, but for the first time, seven other movie-significant areas are travelable: Asgard, Malibu, South Africa, the Helicarrier, the Bartons' farm, Washington, D.C., and Sokovia. These hubs contain hundreds of side quests and bonus levels, including rescuing citizens and races.

Unlike *Lego Marvel Super Heroes*, which used original voice acting, *Lego Marvel's Avengers* uses archival audio from the six adapted films, including voice and music, similar to *Lego The Lord of the Rings*, *The Lego Movie Videogame*, *Lego The Hobbit*, and *Lego Jurassic World*. Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Ashley Johnson, Hayley Atwell, Michael Peña, and Ming-Na Wen reprise their film and TV roles, and Stan Lee voices himself. Robbie Daymond voices A-Bomb, Lou Ferrigno voices himself, and Greg Miller voices Aldrich Killian.

A pre-order bonus DLC level, 'Ant-Man: The Heist', was available for all platforms, not as free timed exclusive PlayStation DLC.

Lore & Background

Lego Marvel's Avengers primarily follows the plots of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, with single levels based on Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The game features over two hundred playable characters, drawn mostly from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also includes comic book characters such as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel. The game utilizes archival audio from the films, with actors like Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, and Stan Lee reprising their roles.

Reader's Guide

Lego Marvel's Avengers received mixed reviews, with many critics calling it inferior to its predecessor. Review aggregator Metacritic rated it 'mixed or average' on all platforms. IGN gave it 6.7 out of 10, noting it was 'great fun, but unfortunately restricted by sticking to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.' GameSpot awarded it 7.0 out of 10, saying it offered 'another familiar and fun adventure.' The game's significance lies in its expansion of the Lego franchise formula, introducing seven movie-significant hub areas beyond New York City, and its use of film audio rather than original voice acting. Its legacy is as a competent but uninnovative entry in the long-running Lego video game series.
