Production
The series is typically filmed near Kruger National Park on a site in the Blyde River Canyon, within a nature reserve in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The jungle camp and TV studios are based in Swadini Nature Reserve, close to Swadini, A Forever Resort, located off a waterfall trail accessed from a public road. A temporary production base is housed there, continuing down to the visitor information centre and observation deck for the Blyderivierpoort Dam.
Between series, the camp, trial sets, and production facilities are almost entirely dismantled and removed. The camp and trial areas are dressed with thousands of plants grown in bags with drip irrigation to survive weather conditions. Triosphere, a local production company, assists by providing crew members. The series was renewed for a second season on 16 July 2015, premiering 31 January 2016, accompanied by the companion series I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!
Now! on Eleven (later 10 Peach), hosted by Joel Creasey and Heather Maltman; this companion show did not air after later seasons due to low ratings. A third season premiered 29 January 2017, a fourth from 28 January to 12 March 2018, a fifth on 13 January 2019 (airing over four weeks instead of six), and a sixth on 5 January 2020.
Format
A group of well-known personalities live together in a specially constructed camp in a jungle, isolated from the outside world and generally unaware of outside events. Contestants compete for $100,000 to be donated to a charity of their choice, in addition to personal reimbursement for participation. While in the jungle, some contestants—usually voted by the viewing public—compete in challenges for food and luxuries, often involving local wildlife and designed to take them out of their comfort zone.
Each week, one or more contestants are evicted based on viewer votes or challenges. Contestants overwhelmed by the situation can leave by saying 'I'm a celebrity...get me out of here!', though quitting reportedly reduces their participation income. Additional contestants called 'intruders' enter the competition; from season two, some appear only temporarily as guest appearances. A final viewer vote determines the winner, who receives the title 'King or Queen of the Jungle'.
Daily trials test physical and mental abilities, with the winner determined by stars collected, each star representing a meal for camp mates. In the fifth season, the 'Sunday Slam' had celebrities complete a giant obstacle course; success won a 'slam' of meals, failure left little or no food. The course included a slippery slide, electric forest, spinning turntable, twin spinning logs, mole hole, feathering chambers, and boulder dash.
Series results
Throughout the series, contestants could swap teams via challenges. On Day 6 of one season, the game 'Escape Fartists' allowed Luke, Richard, and Angie to move to the Red team in exchange for Jacqui, Sam, and Yvie moving to the Blue team. The Grand Final of that season was recorded on Wednesday 13 February (Day 33) but aired on the following Sunday 17 February due to scheduling. When Lambie appeared in 2019, she was not serving as a Senator; she was re-elected to the Senate in the 2019 Federal Election.
The sixth season was renewed on 7 February 2019 and returned on 5 January 2020. The seventh season, renewed on 11 May 2020 and premiering 3 January 2021, was the first filmed in Australia and pre-recorded due to the COVID-19 pandemic; celebrities were eliminated in Elimination Trials, with the winner determined by public vote among the final seven. The eighth season premiered 3 January 2022, the ninth on 2 April 2023 (the first since the pandemic to return to live broadcast in South Africa, and the last with Chris Brown as host).
Season 10 premiered 24 March 2024 with Robert Irwin hosting alongside Julia Morris; on 31 March celebrities were divided into Team Julia and Team Robert. The eleventh series premiered 19 January 2025, and another eleventh series (renewed November 2025) premiered 18 January 2026, with Green Team captained by Cyrell and Gold Team captained by Gary; Cyrell and Matt entered the Elephants' Graveyard camp on Day 1 before joining the main camp.
