Valderrama began his MLS career with the Tampa Bay Mutiny in the league's inaugural 1996 season, winning the first Supporters' Shield and being named league MVP. He later played for Miami Fusion, returned to Tampa Bay, and finished his MLS career with the Colorado Rapids in 2002. He recorded 26 assists in 2000, one of several 20+ assist seasons in MLS history (Preki had 20 in 1996 and 1997, Marco Etcheverry had 23 in 1999).
