Buster Harvey

Canadian NHL forward who played for four teams.

Last updated

Frederick John Charles 'Buster' Harvey was a Canadian ice hockey player who appeared in 407 NHL games for the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota North Stars, Kansas City Scouts, and Atlanta Flames from 1970 to 1977. He was born on April 2, 1950, and died on November 25, 2007.

Playing career

Harvey, a native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, moved to Ontario as a youth and played junior hockey with the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Hockey Association. The Minnesota North Stars selected him in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, and he made his NHL debut that same year. After four seasons with the North Stars, he was traded to the Atlanta Flames.

Early in his second season with the Flames, Harvey was traded to the Kansas City Scouts, who then traded him to the Detroit Red Wings. He finished his NHL career with Detroit and retired in 1978 following one season in the minor American Hockey League. Harvey died in 2007, eight months after being diagnosed with cancer.

The Grant-Harvey Centre in Fredericton is named after him and longtime friend Danny Grant; originally named only after Grant, Harvey behest that his own name be added. An annual peewee AAA hockey tournament in Fredericton is called the Buster Harvey Memorial tournament. In 2013, female goaltender Tayah Sommer of the Fredericton Caps became the first female player in the tournament's six-year history to receive the Unsung Hero award, presented by Mrs. Harvey at the Grant-Harvey Centre.
