Aguirre's transition from player to manager saw him lead Athletic Bilbao through some of its most dramatic seasons. After managing reserves and Deportivo Alavés, he took charge of the first team in 1976–77. During his three-year tenure, the Lions finished third twice and reached two major finals: the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Cup, both in 1977. His managerial career also included a stint with Hércules CF, where he suffered relegation in 1981–82, and a brief but pivotal role at Valencia CF the following season. With only seven games left, Aguirre steered Valencia to safety, securing three wins, two draws, and two losses. In a twist of fate on the final matchday, Valencia defeated league leaders Real Madrid, ensuring their survival while simultaneously handing Athletic Bilbao the La Liga title—thanks to Valencia reciprocating by beating UD Las Palmas, who were relegated in 16th place.
