Dogmatix
A white terrier with a fixed idea: to follow Obelix and protect the forests of Gaul.
Dogmatix (pronounced dog-MAT-iks; French: Idéfix) is a fictional white terrier and the constant companion of Obelix in the Asterix comics. His name serves as a pun on 'dog' and 'dogmatic,' while the original French title plays on 'idée fixe,' meaning an obsession. Although his role is often minor and funny, acting as a point of contention between Asterix and Obelix regarding his inclusion in adventures, he frequently fulfills crucial plot functions. He is recognized by the authors as the only known 'canine ecologist,' loving trees and howling in distress whenever one is damaged. Despite his small stature, he is quite fearless, though he has never consumed the magic potion.

Lore & Background
Dogmatix first appeared in Astérix et le Chaudron (Asterix and the Cauldron), originally conceived as a one-off character sitting outside a butcher's shop in Lutetia. Artist Albert Uderzo suggested he follow Asterix and Obelix throughout the story. The name 'Idéfix' was chosen via a contest in Pilote magazine, submitted by Hervé Ambroise, Dominique and Anne Boucard, and Rémi Dujat; it reflected the dog's 'fixed idea' to obtain a bone from the Gauls. He is fiercely protective of Obelix, often displaying jealousy or hostility toward women who show affection for him, such as Panacea in 'Asterix the Legionary' or Influenza in 'Asterix and Caesar's Gift.' Interestingly, while loyal to Obelix, he has never sided with Asterix against Obelix during arguments in stories like 'Asterix and the Soothsayer' or 'Obelix and Co.'
Reader's Guide
Dogmatix is defined by his fearlessness and his love for nature, specifically trees, which leads him to howl in distress if any are damaged. He has drunk the magic potion multiple times, granting him superhuman capabilities, though his favorite treat remains simply chewing a bone. Unlike other villagers who tolerate Cacofonix with difficulty, Dogmatix openly dislikes the bard's music. His relationship with Obelix is central; he often serves as a 'bone' of contention regarding whether he should join adventures, yet he consistently proves his value through small but vital actions.
He has been shown to side with Asterix against Obelix in arguments on various occasions. In 1973, his popularity spawned a line of children's books featuring text and illustrations that were not consistent with the main comic continuity; these included titles like 'Dogmatix the Athlete' and 'Dogmatix at the Circus.' On January 6, 2021, it was announced he would star in an animated series titled 'Dogmatix and the Indomitables,' leading to new comic albums starting with 'Show no mercy to the Romans!' in 2021.
