Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa
Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa (born 28 January 1950) is the King of Bahrain, a position he has held since 2002, having previously served as Emir from 1999. He was born in Riffa to Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, then Crown Prince, and Hessa bint Salman Al Khalifa. After early schooling in Bahrain and England, including at Applegarth College and The Leys School, he graduated from the Mons Officer Cadet School in 1968. He later earned a degree in leadership from the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1973. Designated heir apparent in 1964, he served as commander of the Bahrain National Guard and later as commander-in-chief of the Bahrain Defence Force, also holding the post of minister of state for defence. He established the Bahrain Amiri Air Force as an independent branch in 1987. During the 1990s uprising, he negotiated with opposition figures and issued a statement supporting the government in 1996. He also condemned Hamas attacks that year and participated in a US-led counterterrorism summit. Upon succeeding his father in 1999, he released political prisoners and introduced the National Action Charter, leading to a 2002 constitution that transformed Bahrain from an emirate to a constitutional monarchy. His reign has seen economic diversification and growth as a financial hub, but also political tensions, most notably the 2011 uprising, during which he declared martial law and permitted Saudi and Emirati troop deployments. Human rights violations by security forces have been documented. In foreign policy, he maintained close ties with the US, UK, and Saudi Arabia, supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq, contributed forces to the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen in 2015, and normalized relations with Israel in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. He joined the US-led Board of Peace in 2026.
