Their common name derives from their close visual resemblance to leaves and other plant parts, combined with their ability to hop rapidly for quick movement, similar to grasshoppers, although they generally walk very slowly. All planthoppers feed on plants by sucking sap, and while most are not considered pests, a few species cause significant agricultural damage. One such pest is *Haplaxius crudus*, a vector for lethal yellowing, a palm disease that nearly wiped out the Jamaican Tall coconut variety. Another is the spotted lanternfly, native to parts of China and Vietnam, which has become an invasive species in South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
Planthoppers have laterally flattened bodies and hold their broad wings vertically in a tent-like position, concealing the sides of the body and parts of the legs.
