The Noctuidae, or noctuid moths (also called owlet moths), have larvae known as cutworms or armyworms. Taxonomically, this family is the trickiest in the superfamily Noctuoidea, because the classification of many of its groups keeps shifting as new research comes in—and the same goes for other Noctuoidea families. For a long time, Noctuidae was considered the largest family in the order Lepidoptera, but after the subfamilies Lymantriinae, Catocalinae, and Calpinae were moved to the family Erebidae, Erebidae took that title. Now Noctuidae is the second-largest family in Noctuoidea, with about 1,089 genera and 11,772 species. Even this count isn’t settled, as more changes keep cropping up between Noctuidae and Erebidae.

**Description**

Most adult noctuids have wings in shades of brown, grey, and other muted colors, but some subfamilies—like Acronictinae and Agaristinae—are very brightly colored, especially in tropical regions (for example, *Baorisa hieroglyphica*). They are identified by a structure in the metathorax called the nodular sclerite or epaulette, which separates the tympanum and the conjunctiva in the tympanal organ; this keeps mites out of the tympanal cavity. Another key trait is trifine hindwing venation, where the second medial vein (M2) is reduced or absent.

Wing markings can help tell species apart. On the forewing, from the base toward the outer edge, there is a horizontal, club-shaped claviform stigma behind a round discal stigma. Farther out is a kidney-shaped reniform stigma, whose exact shape varies, located on the distal edge of the forewing’s cell. Not all stigmata are visible on every specimen or species. Crossbands or crosslines may run from the leading to the trailing edge of the wing.

Larvae are usually green or brown; some species, like the camphorweed cucullia moth (*Cucullia alfarata*), are brightly colored. Most are plump and smooth, with rounded short heads and few setae, though exceptions exist in subfamilies such as Acronictinae and Pantheinae. Pupae range from shiny brown to dark brown; when newly formed, they are bright brownish orange but darken after a few days. Eggs vary in color but are always spherical.

**Etymology**

The name Noctuidae comes from the type genus *Noctua*, which is Latin for “little owl,” plus the suffix *-idae* used for animal family names. The common name “owlet” originally meant a small or young owl. “Armyworms” and “cutworms” refer to the larvae’s behavior: they can form destructive swarms and cut plant stems.

**Ecology**

**Distribution and diversity**

Noctuidae is cosmopolitan, found everywhere except Antarctica. Some species, like the setaceous Hebrew character (*Xestia c-nigrum*), live in the Arctic Circle—specifically in Canada’s Yukon territory at 1,702 meters above sea level, where temperatures range from 23°C to -25°C (73°F to -13°F). Many dart moth species have been recorded at elevations up to 4,000 meters (e.g., *Xestia elisabetha*). In North America and northern Mexico, about 2,522 species have been counted; Europe has 1,576 species, with the rest spread worldwide.

**Mutualism**

Noctuids, like other butterflies and moths, help pollinate plants. Some have especially close ties to their host plants. For instance, the lychnis moth (*Hadena bicruris*) has a strange mutualistic relationship with pink or carnation plants (Caryophyllaceae): its larvae feed on the plant, while the adults pollinate its flowers.

**Food guilds**

*Herbivory*: Most noctuid caterpillars eat plants; some feed on poisonous plants without harm. For example, the splendid brocade moth (*Lacanobia splendens*) eats cowbane (*Cicuta virosa*), a plant highly toxic to vertebrates. *Predation and cannibalism*: Some cutworm larvae readily eat other insects. The shivering pinion (*Lithophane querquera*) commonly feeds on other lepidopteran larvae. Many noctuid larvae—like those of the fall armyworm (*Spodoptera frugiperda*) and genera *Heliothis* and *Helicoverpa*—aggressively eat their siblings and other caterpillar species. *Nectarivory and puddling*: Like many Lepidoptera, adult noctuids visit flowers for nectar. They also seek other liquid foods, such as plant juices, honeydew, dung, urea, and mud.

**Reproduction**

Noctuid moths usually start reproducing from spring to fall, and most are multivoltine—for example, the eastern panthea moth (*Panthea furcilla*) breeds year-round. However, some species have just one brood per year (univoltine), such as the lesser yellow underwing (*Noctua comes*). As is common in Lepidoptera, courtship often involves a series of movements where the female assesses the male’s fitness. Most noctuids produce pheromones to attract mates. Female pheromones that lure males are widespread and well-studied, but research on male pheromones is less advanced.

**Defence**

Noctuids use a wide range of chemical and physical defenses. Among the chemical defenses, three types stand out. Pyrrolizidine alkaloid sequestration, usually seen in Arctiinae, also occurs in some Noctuidae.
