Commonly known as bull ants, bulldog ants, or jack jumper ants, *Myrmecia* is a genus first described by Danish zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius in 1804. These ants are found throughout Australia and its coastal islands, with at least 93 species; a single species is known only from New Caledonia. One species was introduced to New Zealand and last seen in 1981. The genus belongs to the subfamily Myrmeciinae within the family Formicidae. *Myrmecia* ants are noted for extreme aggressiveness, ferocity, and painful stings; some species jump when agitated.
