The Premier League title is the championship of England's top professional football division. Twenty clubs contest it each season, usually from August to May, playing 38 matches apiece, home and away against every rival, with promotion and relegation linking the league to the English Football League. Only seven clubs have been champions since the competition began in 1992: Manchester United (13), Manchester City (8), Chelsea (5), Arsenal (4), Liverpool (2), Blackburn Rovers (1) and Leicester City (1). Arsenal are also one of six clubs to have played in every single season of the league.

Background

By the late 1980s English football was in a slump: ageing grounds, hooliganism and a 5-year European ban after the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster. Big clubs began running themselves as businesses, and David Dein of Arsenal was one of the leading figures pushing for more television money. In 1990 Greg Dyke of London Weekend Television met the so-called Big Five, including Arsenal, to discuss a breakaway, and Dein held talks with the Football Association to win its backing. The FA endorsed the plan in its June 1991 report, Blueprint for the Future of Football. The Founder Members Agreement followed on 17 July 1991, and on 27 May 1992 the 22 First Division clubs resigned together from the Football League.
