Under manager Vic Akers the club went six years without a league defeat, from October 2003 to March 2009, a run of 108 games. Within that spell they won a record 51 league games in a row, between November 2005 and April 2008. Arsenal have completed a record seven unbeaten league seasons in all.

Vic Akers, the long-time kit manager of the men's team, formed Arsenal Ladies in 1987 and was its first manager. Terry Howard took over for 1997–98, and Akers returned for 1998–99. After winning the top division at the first attempt, the club began a long period of dominance and moved permanently into Meadow Park in Borehamwood, sharing the ground with Boreham Wood.

The peak of the Akers years was 2006–07, when Arsenal won every competition they entered, including the UEFA Women's Cup: the first continental sextuple in women's football. They remain the only English club to win the continental treble while going undefeated in all competitions that season.
