Arsenal Football Club's youth system, known as Hale End, is based in London and serves as the club's academy. The teams compete at the highest level of English youth football within the Professional Development League, while also entering the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League. Former player Per Mertesacker managed the academy from 2018 until 2026. The setup is renowned for its success, having secured seven FA Youth Cups and six Premier Academy League titles in total.

The roots of Arsenal's youth football stretch back to 1887 when Royal Arsenal F.C. established a reserve side in Plumstead. Initially playing friendlies, they won the 1889–90 Kent Junior Cup before joining the Kent League in 1895–96, claiming the title the following season. By the early 1900s, the reserves moved through the London League and West Kent League, winning every season from 1900–01 to 1902–03. In 1903, they ascended to the South Eastern League, holding court until football paused for World War I in 1914–15. Post-war, the reserves dominated the Football Combination, matching the first team's success by winning the League South A titles in 1940 and 1943. To foster young talent, an 'A' team was created in 1929, eventually linking with Margate as a nursery side from 1934 to 1938. This era of development laid the groundwork for the modern academy structure.

Reader's Guide

The current Hale End Academy operates under a refined system established after the 2012–13 overhaul. The highest level is now the Arsenal Under-21s (formerly Reserves), which train at the Arsenal Training Centre and play most home games at Meadow Park, occasionally using the Emirates Stadium. Senior players recovering from injury sometimes feature in this squad. Below them, the academy teams compete in the Professional Development League, the top tier of youth football in England.

Andries Jonker served as head of the academy starting July 1, 2014, overseeing significant changes to player education and the construction of new Hale End facilities with three dedicated pitches. Under his tenure, the competition was rebranded to Premier League 2 in 2016. The youth setup has a storied history of winning the FA Youth Cup seven times and the Premier Academy League six times, producing numerous international players who have graduated from both the reserve and academy teams.
