Scott Wedgewood is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who plays for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 84th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the third round of the 2010 NHL entry draft.
Wedgewood began his major junior career with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL in 2009–10, serving as backup to Matt Hackett. After Hackett was suspended during the Western Conference semifinals for deliberately injuring an opponent, Wedgewood made his first career playoff start. He made 70 saves in a 3–2 overtime loss, a performance that became known as the "Wedgewood Game" and drew the attention of NHL scouts. In his fourth and final junior season, the Devils signed him to a three-year, entry-level contract on March 20, 2012.
Wedgewood made his NHL debut for the Devils on March 20, 2016, earning a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. In his second game, he recorded his first NHL shutout against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He re-signed with the Devils on a one-year, two-way contract in July 2017 and was assigned to their new AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Devils. After one win there, he was recalled when starting goaltender Cory Schneider was injured.
On October 28, 2017, Wedgewood was traded to the Arizona Coyotes for a fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft. On February 21, 2018, he and forward Tobias Rieder were traded to the Los Angeles Kings for goaltender Darcy Kuemper. He did not play for the Kings, spending the rest of his contract with their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign.
As a free agent, Wedgewood signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Buffalo Sabres on July 1, 2018. He played the entire 2018–19 season with their AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, posting 28 wins and a .908 save percentage in 48 games. He then signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1, 2019. While playing for the Syracuse Crunch, he suffered a lower-body injury on December 6 that kept him out for 4–6 weeks. He returned on January 20, making 26 saves in a 4–2 win over the Utica Comets. He was one of eight players called up for the Lightning’s training camp before the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs.
On October 11, 2020, Wedgewood returned to the New Jersey Devils on a one-year, two-way contract. On May 10, 2021, he was the Devils’ nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
