Keith Yandle

Keith Michael Yandle is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman and media personality. He played 1,109 games in the NHL for the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, and Philadelphia Flyers. Yandle owns the third-longest ironman streak in NHL history with 989 consecutive games played, and he held the all-time record from January 2022 until October 2022.

Born on September 9, 1986, in Boston, Massachusetts, Yandle grew up in a family where both parents worked long hours for FedEx—his father Bud drove trucks, and his mother Patti, who lived with rheumatoid arthritis, worked as a dispatcher. Though his father also coached youth hockey in Milton, Massachusetts, Yandle wasn’t a full-time hockey player as a kid. He played multiple sports—hockey, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, and football—depending on the season. During hockey season, scouts and All-Star teams often overlooked him in favor of Dan McGoff, a flashier defenseman from Charlestown. McGoff never made the NHL, but Yandle used their rivalry as motivation to improve.

In 2000, Yandle played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from the South Shore region of Massachusetts. He then played high school hockey at Milton High School, leading the Wildcats to an 18–2 record. After one year, he transferred to Cushing Academy, a college-prep school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, to focus solely on hockey. As a junior in 2003–04, he scored 14 goals and 48 assists; as a senior, he added 14 goals and 40 assists in 34 games, earning All-New England First Team honors.

Yandle originally planned to play college hockey at the University of New Hampshire, where his older brother Brian was already playing, but he struggled academically in high school and was denied admission. He then verbally committed to the University of Maine, but ultimately chose to skip college and sign with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), believing junior hockey was the fastest path to turning pro. Playing alongside future NHL stars Brad Marchand and Jason Demers, Yandle put up 25 goals and 59 assists—the highest total ever by a Moncton defenseman. The Wildcats went 52–15–0–3, earning a franchise-record 107 points. They won the President’s Cup as QMJHL champions and advanced to the Memorial Cup, where they lost in the finals to the Quebec Ramparts.
