Thalakkal Chanthu

Kurichya archer and commander-in-chief under Pazhassi Raja.

Thalakkal Chanthu

Thalakkal Chanthu, also known as Thalakkal Chandu, was a skilled archer who led the Kurichya tribal fighters as their commander-in-chief during the early 1800s. He served under Edachena Kunkan, who later raised him to the rank of general. Pazhassi Raja and his other commanders considered Chanthu their most capable war leader.

In 1802, the British East India Company had imposed heavy taxes on Wayanad’s farmers, sparking widespread anger. When a Company peon tried to take paddy from a Kurichya man, Edachena Kunkan killed him. This act drove the entire Kurichya tribe to join Kunkan’s rebellion, which was being fought on behalf of Pazhassi Raja. On October 11, 1802, a force of 175 Kurichya archers, led by Thalakkal Chanthu and Edachena Kunkan, stormed the British fort at Panamaram. The fort was defended by the 1st Battalion of the 4th Bombay Infantry. Captain Dickinson and Lieutenant Maxwell were killed, along with all 70 soldiers guarding the fort.

The British struck back and trapped Chanthu on November 15, 1805. He was executed beneath a Koly tree. Edachena Kunkan later took his own life when surrounded at Panniyil, now called Pannichal in Kerala.

In 2012, the Kerala State Government unveiled a memorial to Chanthu near Panamaram Fort, on the banks of the Kabini River. The museum displays models of the weapons he and his Kurichya archers used, along with traditional farming tools of the tribe.

Lore & Background

Thalakkal Chanthu began his military career under Edachena Kunkan, who later promoted him to the rank of general. Pazhassi Raja and his other generals and troops saw Chanthu as their ablest war leader. The British East India Company had imposed a high revenue tax on agricultural produce of Wayanad farmers, causing widespread dissent. When a Company peon demanded paddy from a Kuruchiya man, Edachena Kunkan killed the peon, prompting the entire Kurichya tribe to join Kunkan's fight against the British on behalf of Pazhassi Raja.

On 11 October 1802, a group of tribal soldiers comprising 175 Kurichya archers, led by Thalakkal Chandu and Edachena Kunkan, captured the British fort at Panamaram. The fort was defended by the I battalion of 4th Bombay infantry. Commanding officer Capt. Dickinson and Lt. Maxwell were killed in action along with the entire detachment of 70 soldiers guarding the fort. The British forces launched a retaliatory attack and trapped Chanthu on 15 November 1805. He was executed under a Koly tree. Edachana Kunkan committed suicide when he was surrounded at Panniyil later (now called Pannichal, Kerala).

Reader's Guide

Thalakkal Chanthu's significance lies in his role as the commander-in-chief of the Kurichya archers who fought alongside Pazhassi Raja against British colonial forces in the Wayanad region. His leadership in the Panamaram fort massacre on 11 October 1802 demonstrated the effectiveness of tribal archers against a trained British infantry battalion, resulting in the complete destruction of the garrison. The Kerala State Government recognized his legacy by installing a memorial on 22 September 2012 near Panamaram Fort on the banks of the Kabini River. The memorial, in the form of a museum, displays weapon models used by Chanthu and his tribesmen, the Kurichiya archers, as well as the tribe's traditional agricultural implements. Chanthu's execution under a Koly tree on 15 November 1805 marked the end of his direct involvement in the rebellion, but his memory is preserved through this official commemoration.
