Mangal Singh Champia began archery in 1995 and became a professional in 2008. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, he finished his ranking round with a total of 678 points, one point behind Juan René Serrano and equal with Viktor Ruban, scoring more bull's eyes than Serrano. This gave him the second seed for the final competition bracket. In the first round he defeated Hojjatollah Vaezi of Iran 112-98, but in the second round he lost to 31st seed Bair Badënov of Russia 109-108; Badënov went on to win the bronze medal. Champia also secured a berth for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
