Tsubasa Arihara is a spirited girl who enrolls at Satogahama Municipal High School and founds the girls' baseball team, playing shortstop and wearing number 6. Ryō Shinonome, an old rival of Tsubasa's who aims to go pro, initially rejects the team for its inexperience; she plays third base and wears number 5. Yūki Nozaki, a tall and unsure girl hesitant about team sports after failing at basketball, joins after seeing the team's supportive atmosphere; she is a first baseman and relief pitcher, batting and throwing left-handed, wearing number 3. Tomoe Kawakita, Tsubasa's best friend called Tomocchi, serves as the sensible straight man and is the team's back-up infielder and first base coach, wearing number 10. Akane Ukita, a shy girl in a cat-eared hooded jacket who speaks in the third person, improves quickly despite initial lack of talent; she is the back-up outfielder and third base coach, wearing number 11. Waka Suzuki, a tsundere with talent for observation and strategy, must be convinced to play after childhood disappointment; she is the catcher, wearing number 2. The mobile game was released for iOS and Android on June 27, 2017, with an animated trailer by A-1 Pictures streamed on July 31, 2016. A four-panel comedy spin-off manga by Bkub Okawa titled Hachi Nai Gaiden: Senryoku Gai! Katato-chan is serialized on the game's official website alongside a novelization; seventy-two chapters had been released as of November 5, 2019. Another spin-off manga, Hachigatsu no Cinderella Nine S by Kōichirō Hoshino, began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Champion on August 19, 2021, later transferred to Manga Cross in March 2022, and ended with its fifth volume on August 8, 2023. The novelization Hachigatsu no Cinderella Nine: Before Summer has twelve chapters. An original net animation adaptation of the four-panel manga, Katato the Animation, streamed on the game's website and YouTube channel between May and June 2017 with four short episodes voiced by Mako Morino. The television anime series, announced on July 30, 2018, aired from April 7 to July 7, 2019, on TV Tokyo; episode 8 was delayed three weeks due to French Open coverage. The opening theme is 'Etude' by Mewhan, and the ending theme is a cover of Noriyuki Makihara's 'Donna Toki mo' performed by Nozomi Nishida, Reina Kondō, Saki Minami, and Honoka Inoue under character names. Crunchyroll streamed the series, and Sentai Filmworks licensed it in December 2019 for the Americas, Europe, and Oceania.
