Blue Dragon (TV series)
Anime adaptation of the Blue Dragon video game series.
Last updated
The anime television series Blue Dragon adapts Mistwalker's video game series of the same name.[1] Studio Pierrot produced the show, which TV Tokyo broadcast.[1]
Making and release
The anime adaptation was announced in November 2006.[2] It was directed by Yukihiro Matsushita, written by Akatsuki Yamatoya, animated by Studio Pierrot, and co-produced by TV Tokyo and Pierrot.[2] An uncut English version was later discovered to have been made by Viz Media.[3] Manga Entertainment released the first 24 uncut episodes on DVD exclusively in the UK, but further sets were cancelled due to low sales.[4]
From April 7, 2007, through March 29, 2008, TV Tokyo aired 51 episodes of the series.[2] Viz Media made Blue Dragon available for streaming on VizAnime, Tubi, and Hulu starting July 22, 2011.[4]
What the cited sources add
The anime includes several divergences from the original video game series.[2] The uncut DVD releases restored the original Japanese opening and closing, all edited scenes, and the original music.[4] Those uncut DVDs also offered the option to view the series in Japanese with English subtitles.[4] During Otakon, Viz Media's Amy Mar mentioned that strong streaming performance could result in a physical, uncut release.[4]
