Oggy and the Cockroaches

A silent comedy about a blue cat and three cockroaches.

Oggy and the Cockroaches

Oggy and the Cockroaches is a French animated television series created by Jean-Yves Raimbaud, produced by Gaumont Multimedia for season 1 and Xilam Animation for seasons 2–8. The show follows the comedic exploits of a rotund blue cat named Oggy, whose days are ruined by three cockroaches—Joey, Marky, and Dee Dee—who cause mischief in his home. Notable for its use of silent comedy, the series relies on unintelligible gibberish, gestures, facial expressions, sound effects, and sardonic laughter, with complex scenes illustrated via images, text, speech balloons, or pictograms.

Lore & Background

The series chronicles the burlesque adventures of Oggy, an anthropomorphic cat who spends his days watching television, lounging, and eating, but is continually pestered by three cockroaches seeking control of his house. The cockroaches are named after members of the Ramones: Joey (purple and pink, the leader), Marky (green and grey, laid-back), and Dee Dee (orange and dark-blue, always hungry). Oggy is often helped by his cousin Jack, a more violent and short-tempered green cat, and other recurring characters include Bob, a short-tempered bulldog neighbor, and Olivia, a white cat who becomes Oggy's love interest. The show relies on slapstick humor, sometimes using atomic bombs or submarines, inspired by Tom and Jerry.

In India, the series airs with voice-acted dialogue in Hindi and other languages. The fifth season loosely uses ideas from Oggy and the Cockroaches: The Movie, covering adventures across various historical time periods.
