AstroLOLogy

A silent comedy web series based on the Greek zodiac signs.

AstroLOLogy

AstroLOLogy is a CGI animated comedy web series from Lemon Sky Studios. It first appeared on YouTube on 3 August 2018. The show has no dialogue, telling its stories purely through visuals, with actors providing only interjections. It holds the distinction of being the first comedy series built around zodiac signs.

The series consists of two seasons, each containing 12 chapters. A new chapter was released every month, and each chapter includes 12 episodes, one for each character. This adds up to 288 episodes in total, each running for two minutes. The characters are based on the 12 Greek zodiac signs, transformed into human-like figures whose designs and personalities loosely match their sign’s archetypes. The show relies on slapstick and situational humour, with each episode highlighting a key trait of its featured zodiac sign. A message at the end reveals a stereotypical characteristic about that sign, letting viewers learn something about the signs.

Despite being a web series, AstroLOLogy received a Japanese dub for broadcast on J:COM under the title “アストロロロジー ~おかしな12星座うらない~.” It also got a Chinese dub for the streaming service Tencent Video. Spanish company Imira Entertainment acquired the show for its distribution slate ahead of MIPTV Media Market in 2018.

The voice cast includes Lester Wong Tze Jiang (Aries and Capricorn), Haishal Hailzil Hailmi (Aquarius), Hafeez Aziz (Leo and Libra), Santosh Lograndan (Taurus), Archana Shanmuganatham (Cancer), Steven Bones (Gemini and Scorpio), Siti Nursabrina Saiful Bahri (Virgo), and Au Yoong Yuin Yii (Pisces and Sagittarius). Their voices are used only for interjections.

Production began in 2015. Creator Ken Foong targeted the series at ages 8–12 but wanted it to appeal globally to any age group. He aimed to create a cast that “made up people’s identity.” He considered blood type characters and the Chinese zodiac before settling on the Greek zodiac because it is recognized worldwide. Slapstick humour was added for comedic effect. A 2D version was tested, but the 3D version received a better response.

After its 2018 YouTube release, AstroLOLogy gained over 210 million views and 639,000 subscribers. In 2020, Foong noted that 17% of viewers came from the US, with viewership spanning many countries.

Lore & Background

Production for AstroLOLogy began in 2015. Ken Foong stated that while he primarily targeted the series at ages 8–12, he intended it to appeal globally to any age group. Foong's goal was to create a series with a cast of characters that 'made up people's identity'; he considered Blood Type characters and the Chinese Zodiac before settling on the Greek Zodiac signs because that concept was understood worldwide. Slapstick humour was added to make the show more comical. A 2D version was tested, but the 3D version received better reception. The series focuses on the 12 zodiac signs from Greek mythology transformed into human-like characters with memorable personalities, each design and personality loosely based on their zodiac sign's archetypes. Each chapter contains 12 episodes focusing on one zodiac sign's key trait, with a message at the end allowing viewers to learn stereotypical characteristics about the signs. Despite having no dialogue, the series uses voices for interjections from actors including Lester Wong Tze Jiang, Haishal Hailzil Hailmi, Hafeez Aziz, Santosh Lograndan, Archana Shanmuganatham, Steven Bones, Siti Nursabrina Saiful Bahri, and Au Yoong Yuin Yii. The series was given a Japanese dub for J:COM under the name 'アストロロロジー ~おかしな12星座うらない~' and a Chinese dub acquired by Tencent Video. It was also acquired by Spanish-based company Imira Entertainment for distribution ahead of MIPTV Media Market in 2018.

Creative Vision & Production

Ken Foong began developing AstroLOLogy in 2015, aiming to build a cast of characters that made up people's identity. He considered several cultural frameworks—Blood Type personalities, the Chinese Zodiac—before settling on the Greek Zodiac signs, reasoning that their archetypes were recognized across the globe. Though he primarily targeted children aged eight to twelve, Foong designed the show to resonate with viewers of any age and any country. To keep the tone light and universally funny, the team leaned heavily on slapstick and situational comedy. During early development, a two-dimensional animation style was tested, but audience feedback favored the three-dimensional look, so the final product went with CGI. The result is widely credited as the first comedic animated series built entirely around zodiac sign personalities, a distinction that set it apart from other astrology-themed content.

Format & Structure

AstroLOLogy runs on a remarkably precise structural grid. Across two seasons, the series delivers 24 chapters—12 per season—each chapter containing 12 short episodes, one dedicated to each zodiac sign. That totals 288 episodes, every single one clocking in at just two minutes. The show contains no spoken dialogue at all; instead, every story is told purely through visual gags, physical comedy, and expressive character animation. The only vocal elements are brief interjections provided by a rotating cast of voice actors, including Lester Wong Tze Jiang, Haishal Hailzil Hailmi, Hafeez Aziz, Santosh Lograndan, Archana Shanmuganatham, Steven Bones, Siti Nursabrina Saiful Bahri, and Au Yoong Yuin Yii, each assigned to one or two signs. At the close of every episode, a short on-screen message highlights a stereotypical trait of the featured sign, giving the comedy an educational undercurrent without ever breaking the visual storytelling format.

Global Distribution & Critical Recognition

Despite launching as a YouTube web series on 3 August 2018, AstroLOLogy quickly outgrew its online origins. A Japanese-language dub was produced for broadcast on J:COM under the title "Astrology ~Oka-shi-na 12 Seiza Uranai~," and a Chinese dub was acquired by Tencent Video. Spanish-based Imira Entertainment also picked up the series for its international distribution slate ahead of the 2018 MIPTV Media Market. By 2020, the channel had amassed over 210 million views and nearly 640,000 subscribers, with 17 percent of its audience coming from the United States. The critical response was equally impressive: in 2020 alone, the show collected Best Animation Short at the London Independent Film Awards, Best Web Series at both the Los Angeles Film Awards and the Latitude Film Awards, Best Children Short at the Independent Short Awards, Best Web Series at Global Shorts, Best Animated Short at the Asian Cinematography Awards, Best Animated Web Series at the New York Animation Film Awards, and an Award of Excellence for Best Animation at the Vegas Movie Awards.

Beyond the Screen – Games & Industry Recognition

AstroLOLogy's footprint has extended well beyond animation. In 2022, Lemon Sky Studios announced "AstroLOLogy Adventure Obby," a Roblox-based obstacle-course game where players navigate a series of challenges using tools and can challenge friends to timed races; the release was tied to the announcement video reaching 1,000 likes. Then in 2024, arcade manufacturer Zooom Studios, distributing through PrimeTime Amusements, brought the brand into physical arcades with a two-player coin-pusher cabinet. In that game, players fire marbles at three moving targets to light up corresponding holes, and once all three are activated, a wheel spins to release a "zodiac ball." The studio's achievements also drew institutional recognition: Hasnul Hadi Samsidin, Vice President of Digital Creative Content at Malaysia's MDEC, publicly praised Lemon Sky Studios for the success of its original intellectual property, underscoring the series' significance to the Malaysian creative industry.
