Jungle Beat is a South African animated series for families. Each episode runs five minutes, has no dialogue, and tells a complete story. The show follows different animals as they deal with strange situations in the wild.
The series comes from Sunrise Productions, a computer animation studio in Cape Town, South Africa. The first episode, "Always Take the Weather with You," was made in Harare in 2003. It was originally a visual effects test for fur and weather. The short was an unexpected hit and won several awards, including "Best Animation" at the African Eye Animation Festival and the Audience Award at São Paulo's Anima Mundi International Animation Festival in 2004. That episode, about a monkey in extreme weather, became the pilot. Its pattern—an animal facing a quirky problem—shaped every episode across three seasons.
Each short features a different animal. Popular characters like Giraffe, Elephant, Monkey, Bee, and Hedgehog appear in multiple episodes, each time with a new predicament.
In 2015, Sunrise expanded the world with *The Jungle Beat Explorers*, a 13-episode 3D series on the Sunrise YouTube channel. It has no dialogue and introduces four clumsy safari adventurers: Mirabelle, Simon, Dexter, and Rita, who document wild animals. Later came *Munki and Trunk*, a 52-episode series (7 minutes each) for ages 4–7. Set in the same universe, it uses the familiar animal cast as an ensemble with deeper relationships. The show is a “tree-crashing, rock smashing, water-splashing, fruit-mashing, knock-about comedy adventure” about two unlikely best friends: crafty Munki and caring Trunk. Sunrise also made *Jungle Beat: The Movie*, released on 26 June 2020. In this version, the animals talk, though earlier episodes sometimes had occasional spoken lines. Season 4 came out in 2023.
Other media includes *Jungle Beat: The Game*, released on the Apple App Store and Google Play on 24 August 2015. It reached the top spot in the South African App Store the next day. The game has 25 levels and targets children aged 4–11.
*Jungle Beat: The Movie* is a 2020 Mauritian animated film directed by Brent Dawes, based on the TV series characters. It premiered at the 2020 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
