A manga about a country boy's rise to Formula One racing.

Noboru Rokuda wrote and drew the manga F, which ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits from 1986 to 1992 and was collected in 28 volumes. It follows country boy Gunma Akagi as he chases his dream of racing in Formula One. The series won the 1991 Shogakukan Manga Award for general manga. A 31-episode anime adaptation by Studio Deen aired on Fuji TV in 1988, and later sequels include F Regeneration Ruri, F Final, and Final Complete.

Plot

Gunma Akagi, rebellious son of Soichiro Akagi, head of the Akagi Group conglomerate, runs away with friend and mechanic Tamotsu Oishi to pursue formula racing. Starting in the FJ1600 series, Gunma shows exceptional talent and advances through the All Japan F3 Championship to international competition. He faces personal tragedies, including deaths of close people and his former lover Yuki's involvement in a deadly power struggle. Gunma later moves to Europe for Formula 3000, eventually joining an F1 team formed by his allies.

The manga F was serialized in Big Comic Spirits from 1986 to 1992, with 28 volumes released from June 1986 to January 1993. A second series, F Regeneration Ruri, ran in Weekly Autosport from June 2002 to March 2006, collected in 12 volumes. A third series, F Final, ran in Best Car from September 26, 2009, to September 26, 2011, collected in three volumes. A fourth series, F Complete, began on Manga Ōkoku on December 25, 2020. A 31-episode anime adaptation by Studio Deen aired on Fuji TV from March 9 to December 23, 1988, with opening and ending themes by various artists.
