The single fossil specimen of *Eomaia scansoria*, the only species within the genus *Eomaia*, measures 10 centimeters in length and is virtually complete. Discovered in the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, China, and dated to the Barremian Age of the Early Cretaceous, the fossil is exceptionally well-preserved for its 125-million-year age. Although the skull is compressed flat, the specimen retains visible teeth, tiny foot bones, cartilages, and even traces of fur. While this fur is clear evidence of hair, it is not the earliest known in the mammalian lineage, as older fossils such as *Volaticotherium* and *Castorocauda* also show fur traces.

*Eomaia* exhibits several features that align it with placental mammals (eutherians) and distinguish it from metatherians (the group including modern marsupials). These include an enlarged malleolus at the bottom of the tibia, a specific offset joint between the first metatarsal and medial cuneiform bones in the foot, and particular jaw and tooth characteristics. However, it is not a true placental, lacking a malleolus on the fibula, a complete mortise-and-tenon upper ankle joint, and having a dental formula of five upper and four lower incisors—more typical of metatherians—along with five premolars and three molars. Like early mammals and living marsupials, *Eomaia* had a narrow pelvic outlet, suggesting it gave birth to small, undeveloped young requiring extensive care. It also possessed epipubic bones extending forward from the pelvis, a feature absent in placentals but present in other mammals, which stiffen the body during locomotion.

The classification of *Eomaia* has been debated. Its discoverers initially placed it at the root of the eutherian family tree. A major 2013 study, however, recovered it outside Eutheria as a stem taxon to Theria, though later researchers have referred to it as a eutherian without providing new analytical support. A 2023 cladistical study again recovered *Eomaia* as a basal eutherian.
