A 2004 study by Senter grouped drepanosaurs with coelurosauravids and *Longisquama* in a clade called Avicephala, placing it within Diapsida but outside Neodiapsida. However, later work by Renesto and colleagues placed drepanosaurids within Sauria, making Simiosauria obsolete. Senter found *Hypuronector* and *Vallesaurus* to lie just outside Drepanosauridae, while *Dolabrosaurus* and *Megalancosaurus* were closely related within it. A 2003 analysis by John Merck also recovered a clade containing drepanosaurids, *Longisquama*, and *Coelurosauravus*, but nested it within Neodiapsida.
