The Enantiornithes, popularly known as "opposite birds," are an extinct group of avialans that were the most abundant and diverse bird-like lineage of the Mesozoic era and the first to spread across the globe. They lived exclusively during the Cretaceous period, diverging from the ancestors of modern birds over 130 million years ago, and vanished at the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary alongside all other non-avian dinosaurs. Externally, they closely resembled modern birds, but almost all retained teeth and clawed fingers on each wing. Their defining internal feature was a reversed ball-and-socket joint in the shoulder: in Enantiornithes, the scapula forms a concave socket and the coracoid a convex ball, the opposite of the arrangement in modern birds. Most species were small, roughly the size of sparrows. The group was first recognized as a distinct lineage in 1981 by Cyril A. Walker, who named them from partial fossils found in Argentina’s Late Cretaceous Lecho Formation. The name "Enantiornithes" means "opposite birds," referring specifically to this reversed shoulder articulation. Earlier discoveries, such as *Gobipteryx minuta*, had been mistakenly classified with modern bird groups. Since the 1990s, many more complete fossils have been found, revealing that previously described "birds" like *Iberomesornis*, *Cathayornis*, and *Sinornis* were actually enantiornitheans. Their fossils have been recovered on every continent except Antarctica, from the Early Cretaceous of Spain and China to the Late Cretaceous of North and South America, indicating they were the first avialan lineage with a global distribution, capable of crossing oceans. The group was ecologically diverse, with forms adapted as waders, swimmers, granivores, insectivores, fishers, and raptors. The first Enantiornithes discovered were mistakenly assigned to modern bird groups; for example, Gobipteryx minuta was originally thought to be a paleognath related to ostriches. Cyril A. Since the 1990s, many more complete specimens have been found, and several previously described "birds" such as Iberomesornis, Cathayornis, and Sinornis were reclassified as Enantiornithes. The name "Enantiornithes" means "opposite birds," from Ancient Greek enantios (opposite) and ornithes (birds). Walker coined the name in his landmark paper, referring to the reversed articulation of the shoulder bones: in Enantiornithes, the scapula forms a socket and the coracoid forms a ball, the opposite of modern birds.
