Role Updates: Engineer & Guardian Angel
The November 2021 update that broke the old certainties.
On November 9, 2021, Innersloth released a major Among Us update that added four roles, Shapeshifter, Engineer, Scientist and Guardian Angel, together with achievements, a level system, controller support, custom keybinds, visor cosmetics and cosmetic bundles called Cosmicubes.

Engineers are Crewmates who can travel through vents like Impostors, but only to a limited extent; Impostors can stay in a vent as long as they want. Guardian Angel is not handed out at the start of a round: the ghost of the first Crewmate to die can become one and protect living players from being killed for a short time.
Reader's Guide
Scientists, the other new Crewmate role, can check vitals from anywhere on the map. Later updates added more roles: Noisemaker, Tracker and Phantom in June 2024, Detective and Viper in September 2025, and Judge in August 2026.
The new roles weakened old certainties. Seeing a player vent no longer proved they were an Impostor when Engineers were in the game, and Shapeshifters, Impostors who can briefly take another player's color and appearance, made even a witnessed kill doubtful.
