Demolition Hammer was formed in 1986 by bassist and vocalist Steve Reynolds, guitarist James Reily, and drummer John Salerno. Their first demo, Skull Fracturing Nightmare (1988), gained notice from fans and independent labels. After adding second guitarist Derek Sykes and replacing Salerno with Vinny Daze, the band released a second demo, Necrology (1989), which secured a contract with Century Media Records. Their debut album Tortured Existence (1990) was produced by Scott Burns on a small budget and featured fast riffs and chunky breakdowns. The follow-up, Epidemic of Violence (1992), had clearer production and faster, leaner songs; both albums featured horror-based artwork and a logo designed by Daze.

As thrash metal's popularity waned in the 1990s, Daze and Reily left to form Deviate NY. Reynolds and Sykes, joined by former Malevolent Creation drummer Alex Marquez, wrote material that the label released under the Demolition Hammer name as Time Bomb (1994). The album had a slower, groove metal style similar to Pantera and Machine Head, lacked guitar solos, and featured a new logo. After playing one of their final shows at Milwaukee MetalFest in summer 1995, the band broke up. Daze died of a heart attack or complications from a pre-existing condition on March 11, 1996. Century Media released the compilation Necrology: A Complete Anthology in 2008.

In March 2016, the band reunited with new drummer Angel Cotte. They played a sold-out show in Brooklyn in June 2016 and performed at Maryland Deathfest that year. In a 2017 interview, Reynolds and Reily indicated they had discussed but not solidified plans for new material. In March 2024, the band performed at the Hell's Heroes music festival in Houston.
