Battlecross was founded in 2003 by childhood friends Tony Asta and Hiran Deraniyagala while attending Salem High School in Canton, Michigan. The band's early lineup solidified with vocalist Marshall Wood (2006), drummer Mike Kreger (2007), and bassist Don Slater (2008). They played local shows around Detroit and the Midwest, opening for acts such as Dying Fetus, Gwar, and DevilDriver.

In 2010, the band self-released their debut album *Push Pull Destroy*. Later that year, Metal Blade Records took notice while the band was replacing vocalist Marshall Wood, who left for family reasons. Kyle 'Gumby' Gunther of the band I Decay was brought in to front the band. The band then recorded a new album, *Pursuit of Honor*, released in August 2011, which featured entirely different songs from *Push Pull Destroy* (including the track 'Kaleb', a separate song from the earlier track 'Aiden'). *Pursuit of Honor* produced three singles that spent 50 weeks on SiriusXM Liquid Metal's 'Devil's Dozen' list. The band went through several drummer changes after 2013, with session and touring drummers including Shannon Lucas, Kevin Talley, Adam Pierce, and Alex Bent. In 2022, the band announced an indefinite hiatus; they continued to play shows after their annual 'Battle Christmas' show.

Kevin Talley of Six Feet Under filled in for the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival and Orion Music + More, while Adam Pierce of All Shall Perish covered a fall tour alongside Hatebreed and Shadows Fall. Shannon Lucas, who had already served as session drummer on War of Will, returned for a stretch into mid-2014 before Alex Bent took over and completed the band's first headlining tour with support from Ikillya. Despite the churn, 2014 saw Battlecross's profile climb sharply: they secured a slot on the Download Festival at Donington Park, toured Europe with Huntress, and headlined a North American run supporting Protest the Hero. The band also made history with their first-ever Mexico City concert on August 20, 2014, in support of Black Label Society, marking a significant geographic expansion beyond their American roots.
