Dee Snider, the former lead singer of Twisted Sister, started Van Helsing's Curse as a side project and orchestra. The group is made up of a five-piece rock band, a six-piece choir, and a six-piece string section. Snider got the idea after watching a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert, wanting to build an orchestra with a Halloween theme. The name comes from the fictional vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. Their first album, *Oculus Infernum* (Latin for "eye of hell"), came out in 2003. It is a concept album narrated by Snider, telling the story of a boy whose town's adults are killed by an entity. The boy seeks revenge and teams up with a descendant of Van Helsing to stop it. That same year, the band worked with Six Flags to create the Van Helsing's Curse Fireworks Spectacular, a Halloween show for Fright Fest at Six Flags Great Adventure. The show used *Oculus Infernum* as its soundtrack, and the album was sold in the park's gift shops. The band started touring in 2004 and later released a concert DVD, *Live in Philly '05*.
