Symphony X
American progressive metal band formed in 1994.
Symphony X formed in 1994 in Middletown, New Jersey. The current lineup features guitarist Michael Romeo, keyboardist Michael Pinnella, drummer Jason Rullo, vocalist Russell Allen, and bassist Michael LePond. The band saw its biggest commercial breakthroughs with *Paradise Lost* (2007) and *Iconoclast* (2011), the latter peaking at number 76 on the Billboard 200.
The band’s early albums *The Divine Wings of Tragedy* and *V: The New Mythology Suite* were partly recorded in The Dungeon, Romeo’s home studio. Later records—*The Odyssey*, *Paradise Lost*, *Iconoclast*, and *Underworld*—were fully recorded there, with Romeo handling production.
Symphony X’s story begins in 1992, when Romeo, previously of Phantom’s Opera and Gemini, recorded a demo in his apartment and sent it to labels. The tape caught the attention of the now-defunct Japanese company Zero Corporation. In April 1994, a new version of “The Dark Chapter,” featuring Romeo and keyboardist Pinnella, came out through Zero. Asked if he had a full band in the same style, Romeo brought in bassist Thomas Miller, drummer Rullo, and vocalist Rod Tyler, keeping Pinnella on keys. They cut a demo called *Danse Macabre* in 1994—it’s unclear if it was only for Zero or also sent elsewhere. Two tracks from that demo later appeared on the band’s self-titled debut, released by Zero in December 1994.
Romeo explained the name in a 2008 interview: the music had keyboards, guitar, and classical touches, so “Symphony” came up; someone suggested “Symphony X,” and they liked it, with the “X” representing the unknown and other elements in their work.
After the debut, Tyler left over creative differences. He had previously introduced the band to Russell Allen, who replaced him. The second album, *The Damnation Game*, arrived in August 1995. Both early albums came out in Asia through Zero and later in Europe under license to German label Inside Out.
*The Divine Wings of Tragedy*, recorded in 1996 and released that November in Japan, built the band’s profile beyond Asia and into the wider metal scene. A European release followed in March 1997 via Inside Out. Romeo later said it felt like they were a “real band” at that point. AllMusic praised Romeo’s “pyrotechnic displays” and noted Pinnella and Miller as equally skilled on their instruments.
