Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns are an American football club based in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, that started in 1983. The team’s first major success came in 2009 when it won the southern division of the German Football League, a feat it has repeated every season since 2011 (as of 2021). Between 2011 and 2022, the Unicorns appeared in every German Bowl except for 2013 and the canceled 2020 season, winning the championship five times (2011, 2012, 2017, 2018, and 2022). They also lost five German Bowls, four times to the Braunschweig Lions (2014, 2015, 2016, 2019) and once to the Dresden Monarchs in 2021. In 2011, 2017, and 2018, the team posted perfect regular-season records in the GFL on the way to the title. In 2016 and 2019, their only GFL losses came in the German Bowl against Braunschweig. During the COVID-shortened 2021 season, they again finished the regular season undefeated (10–0) but lost the final to Dresden. That same year, the Unicorns won their first European championship, defeating the Tyrol Raiders 22–16 in the CEFL Bowl. The club’s only prior national championship appearance had been a loss in the 1997 Junior Bowl to the Berlin Adler youth team.

The club was founded on 9 November 1983 as the American football department of TSG Schwäbisch Hall, which remains its parent club. In 1984, the team entered the 2nd Bundesliga’s central division, winning that division in 1986 and 1987. After failing to earn promotion in 1986, they replaced the Stuttgart Scorpions in the top-tier Bundesliga the following year. The Unicorns spent three seasons there without reaching the playoffs before losing their spot in 1990 when the league shrank from 26 to 16 teams. They then played three seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga before being relegated again. The low point came in 1995, when the team dropped to the fourth-tier Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, but they won that league immediately and earned promotion. After another title in the Regionalliga Mitte, they returned to the 2nd Bundesliga for the 1997 season.

Over four seasons at that level, the Unicorns finished in the top four each year, and a second-place finish in 2000 allowed them to move up to the GFL after two clubs withdrew. For the next seven seasons, they reached the playoffs annually, with a semifinal appearance in 2005 (a loss to the Braunschweig Lions) as their best result.
