The Braunschweig Lions were formed in 1987 and entered the tier-three Regionalliga Nord, finishing third but earning promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. After six seasons in the second tier, they won their division in 1993 and were promoted to the American football Bundesliga. Their first season in the top league saw them finish fourth and reach the play-off quarter-finals. In 1996, they reached the semi-finals, losing to the Hamburg Blue Devils and beginning a strong rivalry.

1997 marked the start of a golden era: the Lions played in every German Bowl for the next twelve years. They won the first three (1997–1999), including two against the Hamburg Blue Devils, and also won the Eurobowl in 1999. After losing five consecutive German Bowls from 2000 to 2004, they rebounded to win four straight titles from 2005 to 2008.
