The Saarland Hurricanes trace their roots to earlier clubs. The Dillingen Steelhawks were formed in 1989 after the folding of the Saarlouis Wölfe, while the Saarbrücken Ghostbusters (formed 1989) were renamed Saarbrücken Wölfe in 1991. By 1996, both clubs agreed to merge, forming the Saarland Hurricanes.

The merged team quickly found success in the second tier, winning its division in 1997 and 2000. In 2000, it defeated the Landsberg Express in the promotion round to earn a spot in the GFL for 2001.
