Paderborn Dolphins

German American football club with two top-level stints.

Paderborn Dolphins

The Paderborn Dolphins are an American football club based in Paderborn, Germany. Their most notable achievement came in 1997, when they earned promotion to the top-tier Bundesliga (now the German Football League), where they competed for two seasons until 1999. After capturing the GFL2 North title in 2022, the Dolphins returned to Germany’s highest level in 2023, playing there for three more seasons.

The team began league play in 1992 in the fourth-tier Verbandsliga. After two seasons, they moved up to the Regionalliga, where they stayed until 1995. A further promotion took them to the 2nd Bundesliga, where they finished sixth in 1996. In 1997, led by American import quarterback Bradly Strohm, they won their division. In the promotion round, they defeated the Berlin Adler, a founding club of the Bundesliga, ending the Adler’s 19-season run in the top division since 1979.

In the Bundesliga, the Dolphins’ only win in 1998 came on the road against the Stuttgart Scorpions in an interconference game. They secured their league spot through the relegation round by beating the 2. Bundesliga’s Berlin Rebels. The following season, playing as AFC Paderborn, the team could not complete its fixtures, and its results were removed from the standings, leading to relegation.

From 2000, the club—again called the Dolphins—returned to the third-tier Regionalliga for three seasons. After the 2002 season, they withdrew from league play and restarted in the Verbandsliga in 2004. Two unbeaten campaigns in 2004 and 2005 brought them back to the Regionalliga, where they competed for nine straight seasons (2006–2014). In 2008, they missed promotion after losing to the Hildesheim Invaders in the promotion round, and in 2014, a draw with the Osnabrück Tigers and a victory over the Potsdam Royals earned them a return to the second tier after 14 years. In 2015, the team finished third in the German Football League 2.

Honours include five seasons of German Football League membership (1998–1999, 2023–2025) and two Northern division championships in the German Football League 2 (1997, 2022).

Lore & Background

The Paderborn Dolphins entered league football in 1992 when they joined the tier-four Verbandsliga. The club spent two seasons at this level before earning promotion to the Regionalliga, where it played until 1995. After promotion from the Regionalliga to the 2nd Bundesliga the Dolphins finished sixth in the league in 1996 before winning its division in 1997 led by USA Import quarterback Bradly Strohm. In the promotion round the club defeated Bundesliga foundation club Berlin Adler, ending the latter's nineteen-season stint in the league since 1979. In the Bundesliga the Dolphins' sole victory in the 1998 season came away at the Stuttgart Scorpions in an interconference match but the club defended its league place in the relegation round against 2. Bundesliga club Berlin Rebels. The season after, playing as AFC Paderborn, the club's results were stricken from the table after it found itself unable to complete its fixtures and was consequently relegated.

Reader's Guide

The Paderborn Dolphins represent a notable example of a German American football club that achieved promotion to the top national league twice, though each stay was brief. Their first rise came in 1997, when they defeated the Berlin Adler, a founding club of the Bundesliga, to earn promotion. They played two seasons at the highest level before being relegated after the 1999 season due to an inability to complete fixtures. After years in lower tiers, including two unbeaten seasons in the Verbandsliga (2004–2005) and Regionalliga championships in 2008 and 2014, the Dolphins returned to the German Football League in 2023 after winning the GFL2 North in 2022. Their history illustrates the cyclical nature of club fortunes in German American football, with periods of success followed by rebuilding. The club's resilience is evident in its multiple returns to higher divisions after withdrawals and relegations.
